Graduate in Medicine and Surgery, University of Valladolid (1986), Ophthalmology Specialist (1992), Doctor in Medicine and Surgery, (1995) with research studies on eye allergies.
On completing his internship, he took up the Fellowship in Eye Immunology and Uveitis at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary at Harvard University, USA (1993-95) and underwent postgraduate training in Refractive Surgery at the Autonomous University of Bucaramanga (Colombia, 1997), before studying Optics and Optometry at the Universidad CEU-San Pablo University, Madrid (2002). He trained in Management with a Master in Business Management and Administration (EAP, 1997); University Specialist in Health Quality Evaluation, Planning and Management (2000) and a foundations management course (1999).
He is the author of 445 scientific papers, 70 book publications and chapters, 6 patents and has participated in more than 600 conferences, courses and seminars. He has participated in 93 research projects (66 as lead researcher).
He is currently Director of the “Fernández-Vega” University Institute (2016), Lecturer at the University of Oviedo (since 2012) and accredited as a full professor (2015). His clinical, research and teaching activity focuses on eye surface and inflammation, with original contributions to allergy, dry eye, refractive surgery, uveitis and regenerative eye medicine.
