The Ophthalmology Department of the Universidad de Oviedo, headed by Professor Luis Fernández-Vega, is holding the III Ophthalmology Conference 2012 on Saturday, 2 June at 11:00 hours at the facilities of the educational institution, specifically at the degree hall in the faculty of Medicine.
The conference, coordinated by Dr Begoña Baamonde, is included in the Continuous Training in Ophthalmology and Vision Sciences programsorganised by the Eye Research Foundation [Fundación de Investigación Oftalmológica] (Instituto Oftalmológico Fernández-Vega).
During the session Dr J.L. Encinas, from Madrid, gave a lecture on the tumours of the cilliary body where he insisted that the survival of patients with this illness that undergo surgery is “very good”, but that, however, surgery must not be rushed.
For their part, Drs Álvarez Fernández, C. Junceda, C. Costales and C. González Castaño from Oviedo were in charge of two communiqués, the first one on an outbreak of epidemic keratoconjunctivitis at Hospital Universitario Central de Asturias (HUCA) and the second on the functional results of the RD surgery with and without rhexis of the inner limiting membrane, a “complex procedure”.
As for the first communiqué, it was explained that the virus that provoked the outbreak presents 54 serotypes that affect humans, its very environment-resistant, it could cause up to 60% of all conjunctivitis worldwide and up to 90% if we are talking of viral conjunctivitis. In this regard, the need to take hygiene measures as the “mainstay of the medical treatment” and the importance of achieving an early confirmation, as this disease might cause visual problems for months, was insisted upon.
