The Unit of Eye Surface at Fundación de Investigación Oftalmológica (FIO) will carry out an experimental study on the topical application of plasma rich growth factors (PRGF) in corneal regeneration thanks to a grant by Fundación Mutua Madrileña. It is a research coordinated by Dr Jesús Merayo Lloves, Research Director and Main Researcher at the Fundación de Investigación Oftalmológica and Coordinator on the Clinical Unit of Eye Surface and Inflammation at the Instituto Oftalmológico Fernández-Vega (IOFV).
The therapeutic effect of this experiment will be really efficient depending on how well it can be expressed and formulated in a preparation that mimics the needs of the damaged tissue area. To this effect a detailed study plan, use, formulation and activation of this platelet-rich formula characterised, amongst other things, for its biocompatibility and easy extraction.
The PRGF has mitogenic and angiogenic restorative effects and is applied as treatment for tissue regeneration in a large number of pathologies; it also facilitates and improves many surgical procedures and implementations in the implantology setting, sports medicine, reconstruction of eye surface or aesthetics. On top of this, it also has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties.
The project of the Fundación de Investigación Oftalmológica is one of the ninety Spanish research centres that have been awarded the grant out of 833 candidates.
This grant is received within the framework of the IX Aid Scheme for Medical Research Projects of the foundation of the aforementioned benefit society, an annual initiative that started in 2004 and which has become a point of reference for medical researchers throughout the country as it has led, in some cases, to a significant international medical progress.
