Dr José F. Alfonso Sánchez, from the Instituto Oftalmológico Fernández-Vega (IOFV), has been appointed President of the Spanish Society of Implant-Refractive Ocular Surgery (known as SECOIR in Spanish) during the XXVII Conference held by this Society from the 23rd to the 26th of May in Seville.
He succeeds Dr José Ángel Cristóbal Bescós who fulfilled this role during the period 2008-2012, at this same time Dr José Alfonso served as vice-president of this Society.
During the next four years he will combine this new responsibility with his duties as Clinical Research Coordinator and Head of the Cornea, Crystalline and Refractive Surgery Unit at the Instituto Oftalmológico Fernández-Vega.
This designation represents a significant acknowledgment of Dr José F. Alfonso’s career and work within the area of Ophthalmology and once again, highlights his great ability to face new challenges.
This is not the first time that a doctor from the Institute holds this position, in 1996 Professor Luis Fernández-Vega, Medical Director at the IOFV, took on this responsibility until the year 2000.
This appointment, together with that of Professor Luis Fernández-Vega as President of the Spanish Society of Ophthalmology (known as SEO in Spanish) that took place last September 2011, places both doctors from the Instituto Oftalmológico Fernández Vega in charge of two of the most important ophthalmological societies in Spain.
