  • José Antonio Gegúndez Fernández is a Doctor of Medicine and Surgery with the Extraordinary Award qualification, an ophthalmologist from the Ocular Surface and Inflammation Unit of the San Carlos Clinical Hospital, and Associate Professor of Ophthalmology at the Complutense University of Madrid. He is a cornea specialist and ocular surface, keratoplasty, cataract and anterior segment reconstruction surgery, uveitis and ocular inflammation.
  • He has directed and participated in numerous accredited courses, research projects and clinical trials, and contributes to the education and training of medical and optical-optometry students, and ophthalmology residents. Add more than 800 scientific papers, conferences and communications and is a member of the main national and international ophthalmology societies. Its main lines of research focus on the etiological diagnosis of uveitis, regenerative medicine of the ocular surface, cornea transplantation with femtosecond laser and cataract surgery. In 2016 he was awarded by the American Academy of Ophthalmology for his work related to artificial intelligence applications to the etiological diagnosis of uveitis, an area of knowledge that has been developing and investigating for more than 30 years.
  • In the field of Health Administration, he has been quality coordinator at the Santa Cristina University Hospital, medical deputy director of the University Hospitals of Getafe and the Princesa, as well as the medical director and manager of the latter. He has participated in numerous commissions and groups of experts, highlighting the Editorial Council of Archives of the Spanish Society of Ophthalmology (SEO) and the Scientific Communications Selection Committee of this Society. Since 2015, is part of the Board of Directors of the SEO as a representative vocal by Madrid until 2019, deputy secretary treasurer until 2023 and currently General Secretary. Since 2016 he has been a member of the Board of Directors of the Association of Galician Physicians (Asomega) and since 2019 of the Board of Directors as delegate by Spain of the Pan-American Association of Ophthalmology (PAAO) and of the Ophthalmological Society of Madrid.
